Grow lamps are a critical component for any indoor gardening system. There are, however, many types available, some of which are intended for specific uses. This can be confusing, especially for a first-time indoor gardener. Understanding the differences can clarify which lamp or grow light kits are best when it is time to purchase gardening and hydroponic supplies, though.

Components or kits

One of the first decisions gardeners face is whether to purchase a lighting system piece by piece or to instead opt for a complete kit. Grow light kits can be especially convenient as all pieces are included, and there is no need to worry about the compatibility of your grow light bulb and digital ballast, for example.

Established gardeners may prefer to purchase components individually, however. A full kit, for instance, would be unnecessary if an individual part has worn out and needs to be replaced.

Types of grow lamps

As mentioned, there are several varieties of grow lamps, and each is best suited for a specific use. The metal halide versions, for instance, supply red spectrum light, desirable to increase the plants flowering and fruiting. HPS, or high pressure sodium lamps, on the other hand, provide yellow lighting. Using an HPS bulb is most desirable during the reproductive phase of plant growth. An additional benefit to this variety is the extended life of an HPS bulb. Further, compared to a standard incandescent grow lamp, the HPS bulb provides six times more light for every watt consumed.

To determine which system and which grow light bulb is best for your needs, consider how it will be used. As indicated above, there are differences in the light emitted by the various bulbs. For the best results, it is important to match the light color with your gardening needs. Additionally, its important to compare the lamps in terms of energy use, expected lifespan and light output as well.

Comparing ballasts

When shopping for gardening and hydroponic supplies, its important to remember a vital part of the lighting system is the ballast. In a nutshell, it is responsible for controlling the current in the lighting system.

There are two types available; electronic or digital ballasts. While compatibility with the bulb is the primary consideration when selecting a ballast, it may be helpful to know that the advanced functionality of the digital variety can actually extend the life of a grow bulb.
